After the success of the Christmas Specials and the first video release, Neil Buchanan and Tim Edmunds decided to create a series of specials for Summer. This decision was presumably made during production of the 1996 Christmas Specials.
The Summer specials would primarily take influence from the traditional Summer Specials of the Beano, Dandy, Beezer, Topper, Buster and Whizzer and Chips to name but a few. The recurring theme with most of the comic specials was comic characters going on holiday to the seaside.
Another source of inspiration – The Two Ronnies: By The Sea (1982) and The Two Ronnies: The Picnic (1976).
Third source – Seaside postcard humour (c. 1920s onwards, Donald McGill and many others).
Last time Zzzap! is directed by Adrian Hedley and officially produced by Neil Buchanan and Tim Edmunds. The specials were also edited personally by Buchanan and Edmunds.
The seaside and boating specials used chroma key technology – and all of them were filmed in a small studio, much smaller than the Christmas specials.
The specials were only broadcast once and never repeated. This was also later the case for Series 6, the Autumn Specials and most of Series 8 and 9 respectively.
